In many traditions, specifically Buddhist and Hindu, the repetition of the Lords name (Mantra) over and over again is referred to as japa (Sanskrit). Malas/prayer beads are used to enable the practitioner to still his or her mind while repeating the name of the Lord, rather than counting its repetition. It also heightens the awareness on the need to repeat the Lords name in continuum. Mantra: A Mantra is an invocation, a sacred utterance, sound, syllable, word, or group of words believed to have spiritual powers. The spiritual value of a mantra comes when it is audible, visible, or present in thought. Believed to be older than language the earliest mantras were composed in Vedic times at least 3000 years ago. Mantras/Chants exist across virtually all schools of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, in as much as in Islam, Christianity, Taoism or Judaism. The practice of mantra repetition is said to transform a person's vibrations, energize their chakras, and rekindle their mind, body and spirit to a higher state of consciousness.
